Our History

Every animal has his or her story, his or her thoughts, daydreams, and interests. All feel joy and love, pain and fear, as we now know beyond any shadow of a doubt. All deserve that the human animal afford them the respect of being cared for with great consideration for those interests or left in peace.

Jeev Aashraya started with a small group of friends and animal lovers who were compassionate to the animals struggling on the streets of Lucknow. After several years in helping animals at their own individual levels and distressed by the lack of facilities for rescue and help for stray animals, they decided to work in an organized manner which gave birth to Jeev Aashraya in November 2012.

Originally founded by Mr. Yatendra Trivedi, Mr. Amit Sehgal, Dr. Manish Tewari, Ms. Harshita Deo, and Mr. Chayan Trivedi the family of Jeev Aashraya has been increasing since then. Today, more than a lakh of people are joined to the organization through either social media, volunteering or other activities of the NGO.

Initially, Jeev Aashraya started with operation and maintenance of Kanha Upvan an animal shelter owned by Lucknow Municipal Corporation in the outskirts of Lucknow spread across more than 50 acres. When Jeev Aashraya took over the shelter it housed only 200-300 cattle, while in due course of the next 5 years, Jeev Aashraya housed almost 2000 cattle, 100 small animals like dogs and cats and a few ponies, horses, monkeys etc and a few small and large birds. All the inmates brought in to the shelter were either accident cases, or injured, or sick animals. Jeev Aashraya also operated a Veterinary Hospital in the premises of the shelter which had facilities like operation theatre, wards for large and small animals and nursing care. We successfully conducted a large number of dog sterilization operations under the guidelines of Animal Birth Control Programmme by Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI).

Jeev Aashraya had also started an Animal Helpline and Ambulance service so as to reach animals in distress and help them faster with medical facilities on the spot. Since 2012 we have treated and rescued almost 1000 animals through the helpline and ambulance service. There has been a great contribution to this service by the responsible, compassionate and humane citizens of Lucknow who took the initiative to call our helpline and reported the distressed animals. Today, Jeev Aashraya has its own shelter in village Godhauli about 30 kms from Lucknow and run the helpline service for the distressed animals of the city. We are committed to the cause of animal welfare and will continue to do so for them. We strive to expand and spread the cause among all people so as to accomplish our motto of “Conserving with Compassion”.
